Facing the Unexpected – Kerlene’s Story

As a mother, nothing can quite prepare you for the first time you lay eyes on your child.

The weeks and months leading up to their grand arrival are filled with nervous anticipation and eager excitement. We try to imagine what life would be like once our little bundle of joy arrives.

Will she act like me? Will he sound like his dad? How will it feel to hold her in my arms?

Every discomfort and every pain somehow magically fades away as you finally meet the little person who dictated your sleeping and eating patterns.

For some moms like Kerlene McCall-Woods, that moment can take an unexpected turn.

Living in Trinidad and Tobago, Kerlene’s journey in motherhood hasn’t always been paradise. Within hours of giving birth to her first child, Kerlene and her husband received a life changing diagnosis.

I recently asked Kerlene to share her motherhood journey because it is a reality for many moms around the globe.

While heartbreaking, her story isn’t filled with self-pity.

Her faith could have understandably wavered but through it all Kerlene and her family are determined to make the most out of the path God has chosen for them.

This is Kerlene McCall-Woods. And This Is Her Journey.

25 Verses Every Woman Should Memorize

I’ll never forget the day a minister at my church put me on the spot in front of the entire leadership team.  Everyone was getting ready to head home when out of nowhere he got the brilliant idea that we should take turns quoting one scripture verse.

    Simple enough, right?

Well, I panicked. And instead of reciting my favorite scripture (Philippians 1:6), I awkwardly fumbled over a verse I thought would make me sound super deep and sanctified.

    Big mistake!

Unashamed and Unfiltered: One-on-One With Anesha Collins

With terms like “boss chick” or “boss” becoming the new standard for female empowerment and success, it’s always refreshing to see women who aren’t conforming to the world’s standards; women like Anesha Collins, the CEO of Unashamed Imaging.

Originally from Staten Island, New York, Anesha has deservingly become one of Florida’s rising stars in the field of visual media.

She is a published and award winning photographer and cinematographer.

Her portfolio ranges from the modern-day family or person to well-known clients like the NFL Corporation, Nina Sky, and Martha Munizzi to name a few.

Her company is also listed as a preferred vendor for various premiere venues.

While Anesha could easily brag about her bossness (let’s pretend that’s a word), she’s one of the most humble and down to earth women you’ll meet.

I recently caught up with Anesha to chat about life and of course business. Check out our interview below to meet the brain behind the brand, Unashamed Imaging.

    Disappointment Sucks!

“Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again— my Savior and my God!”
    ‭‭Psalms ‭42:11‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Finally, this was it!  My big breakthrough moment!

I’d been praying and asking God for this for a long time. And finally, the door of opportunity was swinging open.

That is, until I got a phone call that abruptly slammed the door shut on my dreams.

In an instance I went from planning a victory party to having an unexpected invitation to another pity party.

When You’re the Only One In The Room

“Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.” Galatians 1:10 (NIV)

From the moment I saw the email, I knew it was that time of the year again.

Whenever our office ended its busy season, my boss would suggest a celebratory after-work soiree. Normally, I would use my single mom with a long commute card as a way out of attending the dinner, but I knew I couldn’t put it off again.

I reluctantly confirmed my attendance and secretly wished something would come up to force the cancelation of the event.

But as the days drew closer, I knew the likelihood of my prayer being answered was slim to none.
