Take A Closer Look

“But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.” Matthew 5:48

I can never polish my nails as nicely as they do at the nail salon.

Maybe it’s because of the awkward angles I have to paint from. Maybe it’s because this is what they do every single day. Or maybe it’s because I’m just too heavy handed when it comes to the applications.

Either way there’s always a big difference when I DIY my nails versus going to get them professionally done.

Don’t get me wrong, from a distance, you can’t really tell the difference.

When I do my own nails, they’re decent enough to get compliments from others. But when I take a close up look, I can always spot the imperfections.

The closer I examine my paint job, the more over the lines, smudging, and uneven polish I see.

But isn’t that like our walk with Christ?

From a distance, it looks like we have it all together. Others may even admire our public walk, not knowing the private battles we fight every day.

The truth is, the closer we are to Christ, the more we see our sinfulness and just how much we need Him.

As we grow and mature in our journey, God reveals us to ourselves.

He shows us our gifts, our calling and our purpose. And He also shows us our heart, our attitude, and our mindset.

If you’re anything like me, that picture isn’t always perfect. But the good news is, the more time we spend with God, the more we begin to reflect his perfect image and likeness.

So this week, spend some time with God.

I’m talking about real quality time and not just the 5-10 minutes we typically give to Him just to be able to check it off our list of things to do.

Ask God to reveal your flaws, your blunders and your rough patches.

It may be tough hearing how God sees you but remember He loves us with an unconditional love. His only goal is to make us more like Him, from far away and up close and personal.
