Change of Heart: The Follow Up to the Facebook Challenge

Have you ever had a moment where you were just blown away by something God did? Something so unexpected yet incredible that you knew it was only Him?

I recently shared my story about a Facebook challenge that forced me to reexamine my relationship with my daughter’s dad. (CLICK HERE to check out The Facebook Challenge I Wanted to Ignore)

For weeks, I hesitated to complete the challenge.

Will he pick up my call and will it even make a difference?

What if I’m opening up myself to be hurt again?

Despite my efforts to shake off the challenge, I knew it was something I had to do.

The Facebook Challenge I Wanted to Ignore

It was a simple challenge on a friend’s page:

“Single mothers, call your children’s father and share with them one thing you appreciate about him as a father.”

I chuckled, sensing this wasn’t going to end well.

I knew my friend had good intentions. Being a single dad of three boys himself, he simply wanted to spark a healthy conversation to try to boost the image of fathers.

Behind the Scene with Natasha B.

Meet Natasha B. – an up and coming free-lance makeup artist from New York City.

I first met Natasha in a religion class we had to take for our undergraduate degree.  Back then, our biggest concerns were figuring out what we would have for dinner, where we could find a good reggae party or how we could finance our next shopping spree.

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Natasha to chat about her life today as a single mother.

Why I Finally Cut Off My Reserve Guy

Disclaimer: Out of respect for the individual, the name of my “reserve guy” has been changed for this article.  All other details are true.

I have a type. My best friends know my type and for the most part I usually date guys that fit the mold of what I like…

Sean and I met when I was in high school. He’s one of the good guys – comes from a nice family, wasn’t into dating multiple girls at the same time – he was just nice. I always knew Sean had a thing for me but so did his friend.

Since the friend was more my type, he and I dated on and off for a few months.

Sean and I remained friendly even after his friend and I broke up. I eventually went off to college and started dating someone else. I never hid any of my dating life from Sean, neither would he hide his feelings towards me. Continue reading

7 Things You Should NEVER Say to a Single Mother

You’ve probably heard it before – “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”  It’s a cute nursery rhyme we learn as kids, but as we grow up, we quickly learn words do hurt. They can even hurt more than sticks and stones.

Being a single mother often invites unsolicited comments and opinions from others.

While some comments may come from a genuine place, they can be internalized negatively by a single mother.

Of course every single mom’s reactions will be different, but generally speaking, here are seven things you should never say to a single mother:
